Food Specification and Legal Labelling Advisor

Role Details


  • Check and approve food product specifications for major retailers in the UK and ensure that all product specifications and labels comply with legislation, guidance and customer codes of practice
  • Assist and support suppliers in the completion of accurate specifications through regular feedback and advice
  • Provide effective clarification to suppliers and clients on all relevant legal and corporate food labelling polices
  • Review pack copies and other information such as nutrition data to confirm label copy is accurate
  • Ensure all information, claims and layout comply with UK and EU legislation and Customer requirements, and give guidance on these areas as required
  • Detailed knowledge of all specific customer requirements including codes of practice, policies, guidance
  • Review product recipes and ingredients, ensuring customer policies, codes of practice and legal requirements are met
  • Have a detailed understanding of customer specification systems e.g. M&S FIND, Tesco TTL, to ensure correct ways of working are applied in the pack copy approval management processes to guard against labelling errors
  • Share knowledge and experience with customers and internal colleagues, to support growth of knowledge and ability
  • Maintain an awareness of new UK and EC food legislation, and advise in a timely manner of the impact of any changes
  • Record all work accurately in accordance with Ashbury Labelling procedures and customer requirements
  • Create and maintain category specific guidance documentation and work efficiently as a team to ensure a consistent approach can be applied across all product categories




  • 2-3 years’ experience working as Food Technologist / NPD for a leading retailer or food manufacturer
  • 2-3 years’ experience writing or checking food specifications using the systems of the major UK retailers
  • Experience in effective communication with retailers and suppliers
  • Experience in food legislation, its interpretation and application to food labels is preferable




  • Must have a food based degree or a law based degree
  • Familiar with major UK retailers’ Code of Practice labelling polices
  • Working knowledge of FIR regulations and how to apply, and applied knowledge of UK / EU food labelling legislation
  • Sound technical knowledge and understanding of manufacturing processes




  • Competent user of online retailer spec systems (e.g. Tesco Technical Library, M&S FIND)
  • Interpret and apply retailer corporate policy and UK / EU legislation
  • Accuracy and speed are essential requirements, as are organisational skills, and a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Highly analytical and process driven

  • Methodical and highly organised with ability to multi task
  • Excellent communicator (written and verbal), at all levels internally and externally
  • Calm and controlled under pressure whilst demonstrating speed and accuracy
  • Effective time management and task prioritisation
  • Confidence and clarity in decision making and able to work without supervision
  • Strong IT skills to include: Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Keen to learn and take a proactive approach to expand own knowledge
